Why Your Teenager Should Study Abroad?

As any parent will know, the transition from their children being at school to moving away to university, secondary school or elementary school can be a tough one on both sides. If you are used to having your children at home a lot, it can seem very quiet when they eventually move out. But they might end up moving further afield than you previously thought if they opt for a course that allows them to study overseas.

Even though it is a big leap for any teenager to make, it can help them in so many ways, both now and in the future. If your child hasn’t already thought about it then it could be worth bringing up the idea. After all, this is quite often a brilliant opportunity to explore another part of the world and see how other people live their lives. Going on holiday is one thing, but living in another country for a longer duration than normal is very different. It will also expose them to different types of teaching, and it can put them into an environment that is much better for learning.

Let’s suppose they want to learn French, for example. It’s much better to actually live in France while they learn the language than it would be to take a course in their home country. This is simply because they will be surrounded by native French speakers for the duration of the time they are there - it makes it much easier to pick up what is needed. But your kids won’t just learn different subjects when they go abroad, they will also learn a variety of life skills without even trying. The whole experience is set up to make it easier for them to take on their adult life in a much more mature manner.

Of course, the main downside to seeing your child go abroad for a long duration is being apart from one another. They will certainly be of an age where they are capable of looking after themselves, but this doesn’t stop you missing them. That’s why it is important to set up ways in which you can keep in touch before they go. You could arrange to email them if they have a specific address, for example. The 7 Most Important Things to know when you stay with a Homestay Host!!

I've decided to come up with the 7 most important details you need to know when you are staying with a Canadian family. They will be your homestay hosts. But, more importantly, they will think of you as part of their own family. I'm writing this post for both elementary & adult students who want to stay with a homestay host. So bare with me if some of these things appear very basic, such as table manners. Cultures are very different & what is considered polite may even be considered rude in another country. Your homestay host will generally be prepared for most of these situations but there are always new situations that you cannot always plan.

So, read on to find out The 7 most important things to know when you stay with a homestay host: I will first outline the important things that are aimed at elementary students:

1. Quiet Environment: Most Canadian families live in a house. A house usually includes a front or back yard. These areas are considered part of the house. There is always a time & place for running & yelling. The time is outside. Children need to have fun. Having fun means running, yelling & playing tag with their friends. Almost all homestay hosts will appreciate it if you play outside if you want to run, yell & have fun! Almost all homestay hosts like their house to be a quiet area. (Now, I'm not talking like library quiet.) What most homestay hosts respect is normal volumes in their house. Keep the yelling outside.
2. Preparing Meals: Generally, when you stay with a homestay host your breakfast & dinner is prepared for you. However, if Saturday & Sunday are non working days for your homestay host, then usually the host wakes up a little later in the morning such as 9am or 9:30am or even 10am. If you are hungry then your homestay host will not mind if you go to the kitchen & prepare some toast with jam, cereal or even oatmeal. You can open the fridge & pour yourself some juice. For the adults, you can start the coffee machine if you want to & make yourself a pot of coffee. No homestay host will ever mind if you prepare your own breakfast or even dinner. In fact, there are alot of people (men & women) who enjoy to cook. I enjoy cooking!
3. Table Manners: In Canada, families usually try to eat together every night. Most work days end by 5pm & the parents are able to be home by 6pm to eat with the family. Now this is not every family but if a family chooses to be a host family then generally they are making time for the student. Families eat together & have their own plate. They use a knife, spoon & fork to cut their meat & fork to eat their food. Table manners are very important & this is something Do Education takes the time to educate our students to ensure they have a great learning experience. Don' forget to say "please" & "thank you", you can never say it too many times. After every time someone gives you something or does something for you then you can say "thank you". If you need to have the milk passed on the table then you can say "May I have the milk please?".
4. Be Independent: When you are with your homestay host family, try to do many things for yourself. Don't wait for your homestay host to ask you to do something. Offer to help in the kitchen, this will be a great place for you to learn how to cook. (maybe you will like cooking). Try doing everything that you can for yourself, such as making your own lunch, cleaning your room or vacuuming the house. If you don't know how to do something then just ask!
5. Ask Questions: If you don't like something about your homestay, please ask the homestay host. They will not mind that you ask them anything. They want you to be comfortable. For example, if you are cold, ask them to turn up the heat! Or if you want more food, then ask them. Trust me, homestay hosts can't read your mind & need you to tell them what you want.
6. Offer to Help: While you are staying at your homestays house, why not try helping as much as you can. Remember to ask when you first arrive at your homestay this question: What am I expected to do? After you know what you are expected to do then you will know what you should do to fit in properly with the house. Remember, a homestay is not a hotel, motel or free ride. The money that you are paying them doesn't usually provide more money then what is needed to host students. Homestay hosts do this because they are interested in other cultures such as yours & they want to interact with you everyday.
7. Join in With Activites: Try attending as many family activities that you can to become closer with your host family. It will create an excellent memory for you to remember about Canada. If your host family goes on a family outing then ask if you can come along. Most times you probably don't have to ask, they will just include you into the outing. However, remember to be polite when you are refusing. If you can not go together with your family, it's okay to be busy. Just try to join in with as many activities as your busy schedule will allow.

Canada is a wonderful country. We have a great economy (even these days). We usually think positive & we care about others. We will often say “sorry” when we bump into each other on the street. We welcome immigrants & international students into our country. Our economy is strong & growing. I can say many positive things about Canada & we as Canadians are proud of our country. We are a proud member of the G7 & our government is non-corrupt & well organized. I can say many more positive things, however I would like to share the statistics I found regarding Canadian crime.

Please don’t be alarmed or afraid. Canada is a safe place to study & live compared to most other countries in the world. It is very important to be educated about the world. Here is a list of 2007 statistics about the most dangerous cities in Canada.

The 3 Best Places to Study ESL in Canada!

Today is a wonderful day! I currently travel between South Korea & Canada for our business. My wife & I have an International ESL Placement business. (Uhagwon in Korean). I’m currently in Seoul, hosting some seminars right now about upcoming summer programs. After speaking with hundreds of caring parents, I have noticed that the first questions that I always get are: Where should my child study? or Where should I study? or What city is safe for my child? All of these questions are very important.

Now, I’m going to reveal THE 3 BEST PLACES TO STUDY IN CANADA.

I’m going to name the BOARD OF EDUCATIONS & not a specific city. I will however talk about each city or town in brief. Here they are:

Upper Canada District School Board Long term Programs or Short term Programs

Limestone District School Board Long term Programs or Short term Programs
Toronto District School Board

All of these school boards are located in Ontario in Canada. I have chosen these three for many reasons.

Upper Canada District School Board

Limestone District School Board

Good Reasons:

1) Located in Eastern Ontario with almost no international ESL students attending the schools.
2) The school boards are so large & they only have about 300 students that are from another country.
3) Ontario has the largest population compared to all other provinces.
4) These school boards are located nearby every major city in Ontario. (3 hrs from Toronto, 3 hrs from Montreal & 1 hr from Ottawa)
5) These school boards provide the best protection & services for you & your children.
6) The school boards are continuing to grow & are improving their programs.
7) The crime is lower in these areas than any major city.
8) There are fewer immigrants immigrating into these areas. (which means more true Canadian homestays)
9) Friendly, smaller cities that provide safety for your children.
10) Cleaner & low pollution.

Bad Reasons:

1) You can only visit major tourist attractions on week-ends (CN Tower, Niagara Falls, etc.)
2) You & your children might only interact with Canadian students vs other International students.
3) The largest city located in this area is Kingston with approximately 150,000 people.
4) Possibly higher chance to have culture shock because these areas have true Canadian families.
Toronto District School Board.

Good Reasons:

1) Toronto is the largest city in Canada.
2) All the major attractions (CN Tower, Niagara Falls, amusement parks, etc.) are located around Toronto.
3) Excellent International program for international students.
4) More international students attend here which means they understand more about foreign cultures.
5) Growing & active city.

Bad Reasons:

1) Too many international students.
2) Approximately 47% of students here have English as their first language.
3) Approximately 30% of students are born outside of Canada in more than 175 countries.
4) Only 10% of the students have been in Canada for 3 years or more.
5) Less chance for you or your children to interact with Canadian students.
6) Your children might meet other students from the same nationality and speak their native language.
7) Higher crime.
8) Higher Pollution.
